Top 10 Wineries in Santorini
Few wine regions look as strange in the vineyard as Santorini. The vines are trained into low coiled baskets — kouloura — that shelter the grapes from the unrelenting Aegean wind, often on volcanic pumice and ash with no usable topsoil. Many of the vines are ungrafted and centuries old, sitting on root systems that pull moisture out of fog and sea spray rather than rainfall. The result is Assyrtiko, one of the most distinctive white wines on earth — salty, piercing, citric, and built to age in a way few warm-climate whites can claim.
Domaine Sigalas
Paris Sigalas is the modern reference of Santorini. The Kavalieros and 7 Villages bottlings are landmark single-vineyard and single-village expressions, and the late-release Nykteri and Vinsanto demonstrate the variety's range from steely-dry to honeyed sweet.
Hatzidakis Winery
The late Haridimos Hatzidakis was one of the island's most respected biodynamic pioneers; his family has continued the estate. The single-vineyard Skitali Assyrtiko is among the most ambitious wines made on the island.
Estate Argyros
Founded in 1903 — among the oldest continuously operating estates on Santorini. Yiannis Argyros holds some of the oldest vines on the island (Argyros Old Vines Estate is from vines averaging more than 150 years old) and makes a benchmark Vinsanto from sun-dried Assyrtiko, Aidani, and Athiri.
Gaia Wines
A joint project of Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Leon Karatsalos. Their Thalassitis Assyrtiko, including a submerged-in-sea-amphorae cuvée, is technically polished and widely exported. The Nemea outpost on the mainland makes Gaia a multi-region operator.
Santo Wines
The cooperative — owning a wide network of growers and one of the most spectacular tasting terraces on the caldera rim above Pyrgos. The cooperative's Grande Reserve Assyrtiko and Nykteri bottlings show that scale and quality can coexist on Santorini.
Domaine Argyros Vinsanto
Worth listing separately for the Vinsanto programme — the long-aged sweet wine from sun-dried Assyrtiko predates the modern dry style of the island and remains one of the world's great late-harvest wines. The 20-year aged bottlings are extraordinary.
Vassaltis Vineyards
A more recent estate by Yiannis Valambous in Vourvoulos, focused exclusively on Santorini varieties. The Plethora Assyrtiko and the Aidani bottling are among the most expressive of the newer generation.
Boutari Santorini
The Santorini outpost of the long-running Greek wine group from Naoussa. Boutari built one of the island's largest modern wineries in 1989 and has been a consistent producer of well-priced Assyrtiko alongside the boutique estates.
Artemis Karamolegos
In Exo Gonia, run by fourth-generation Artemis Karamolegos. The Mystirio Pure series of single-vineyard Assyrtikos has drawn critical acclaim, and the estate's restaurant is among the most serious wine dinners on the island.
Venetsanos Winery
On the cliff edge at Megalochori, with one of the most dramatic sunset terraces on Santorini. The winery building (1947) was the first commercial winery on the island; restored in 2014, it now produces a refined range of Assyrtiko and traditional Mavrotragano red.
