The Best Biodynamic Wineries Worldwide
Biodynamic viticulture — Rudolf Steiner's 1924 system, now codified by Demeter — has been adopted by a remarkable number of the world's top estates. The practice combines organic farming, lunar-calendar work, and a series of preparations (notably 500 and 501) applied to the soil and vines. These are the estates most associated with it.
Burgundy
Domaine Leroy and Domaine Leflaive are the most prestigious biodynamic names in Burgundy. Domaine Trapet, Lucien Le Moine, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (partial), and Comte Armand all practise biodynamics at the grand-cru level.
Loire
Nicolas Joly at Coulée de Serrant is the famous proselytiser. Domaine Huet, Mark Angeli, Olivier Cousin, and Domaine Vacheron all farm biodynamically.
Alsace
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss, Domaine Marcel Deiss, Domaine Ostertag, and Domaine Josmeyer — among the highest biodynamic densities of any wine region.

Telmo Rodríguez's Compañía de Vinos works biodynamically across multiple appellations; Recaredo in Cava and Niepoort in the Douro are pioneers.

Cullen (Margaret River), Gemtree (McLaren Vale), Henschke (Eden Valley), Felton Road (Central Otago), Seresin (Marlborough), Reyneke (Stellenbosch), Quivira (Sonoma), Benziger (Sonoma), Frey (Mendocino), Bonny Doon (Santa Cruz), and Truchard (Carneros) are reference biodynamic New World estates.
What does biodynamics change?
There's no consensus on whether biodynamic wine tastes objectively better. What's clear: biodynamic estates tend to be smaller, manually farmed, and run by obsessive owners — which may matter as much as the preparations themselves.
