Top 10 Wineries in Paso Robles
Paso Robles is the most diverse wine region in California's Central Coast. The appellation, split by the US 101 between cool, foggy limestone hills to the west and warmer alluvial valleys to the east, has 11 sub-AVAs and grows everything from Cabernet to Rhône varietals to Italian-influenced field blends. The region's modern profile was shaped by a handful of pioneers in the late 20th century; the boom of small estates since 2010 has lifted Paso to the front rank of American wine regions.
Tablas Creek
Founded as a partnership between the Perrin family (of Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and importer Robert Haas. Tablas Creek pioneered the use of authentic Rhône grape clones in California and became the source of much of the Rhône-variety material now planted across Paso. The Esprit de Tablas red and white are reference points.
Saxum
Justin Smith's tiny estate on the west side. The James Berry Vineyard bottlings — particularly the Heart Stone Mourvèdre — are among the most sought-after California wines, and Saxum is a former Wine Spectator Wine of the Year producer.
Linne Calodo
Matt Trevisan's estate, founded in 1998. The names of the wines — "Cherry Red", "Outsider", "Sticks and Stones" — reference the limestone "calodo" soils. The wines are blends of Rhône varieties with Zinfandel; the style is rich and powerful.
Adelaida
A historic west-side estate dating to the 1960s, now run by the Van Steenwyk family. Adelaida grows everything from Pinot Noir (unusual for Paso) to Mourvèdre. The Reserve Pinot Noir from the Anna's Vineyard is a benchmark.
Justin Vineyards
The largest estate on the west side, founded by Justin Baldwin in 1981 and now owned by the Resnick family (FIJI Water, POM). The Isosceles Bordeaux blend put Paso Robles Cabernet on the global map in the 1990s.
L'Aventure
Founded by Frenchman Stéphan Asseo in 1998, who moved from Bordeaux to make wines that combine Rhône and Bordeaux varieties in ways not permitted under French appellation law. The Estate Cuvée and Côte à Côte are flagship blends; the Optimus is a cellar-door favourite.
Booker Vineyard
Eric Jensen's small estate. The Vertigo, Fracture (Mourvèdre), and White (Roussanne) are limited-production bottlings; the style is intense and well-extracted. Booker's mailing list is essentially the only retail route.
Daou Vineyards
A larger, more international-style estate founded in 2007 by the brothers Daniel and Georges Daou. The Soul of a Lion Bordeaux blend is the prestige cuvée; the cellar door is one of the most polished visitor experiences in the appellation.

A west-side estate with both estate wine production and a 280-acre vineyard. The Ancestor red blend has built a strong reputation; the visitor centre is one of the more architecturally significant recent additions to Paso.
Jada Vineyard
Founded by Jack Messina in 2003. The Hell's Kitchen (Cabernet Sauvignon), Passing By (white blend), and XCV (red blend) are the range; the Passing By Roussanne-Viognier set the modern Paso white-blend template.
