Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most planted red grape and the backbone of Bordeaux's classified château system, Napa's cult estates, and a handful of single-estate icons on every continent. The producers below dominate the variety globally.
Bordeaux Left Bank: the first growths
The historical reference. Château Margaux (Margaux), Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, and Latour (all Pauillac), and Haut-Brion (Pessac-Léognan) — five wines whose 1855 classification still shapes Cabernet expectations. Pichon Comtesse, Léoville Las Cases, and Cos d'Estournel often outperform them.
Bordeaux Right Bank (mostly Merlot-led, but Cabernet Franc)
Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, Ausone — Right Bank estates whose blends lean Merlot or Cabernet Franc but belong in any global Bordeaux-blend conversation.
Napa Valley
The New World counterpart. Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Opus One, Dominus, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and Inglenook are reference Napa Cabernets. Mount Eden Vineyards (Santa Cruz Mountains, not Napa) and Ridge Monte Bello deserve a mention as historic California references.
Bolgheri, Tuscany
The Italian answer. Sassicaia (Tenuta San Guido), Ornellaia, Masseto (though Merlot-only), and Solaia (Antinori, technically Chianti Classico) are reference Italian Bordeaux blends.
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Vergelegen (Vergelegen Estate), Meerlust (Rubicon), Kanonkop (Paul Sauer), Rust en Vrede, and De Toren (Fusion V) are reference Cape Bordeaux blends.
Margaret River, Australia
Moss Wood, Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, and Cullen produce Bordeaux-style wines often described as more Bordeaux than Napa in style.
Coonawarra, Australia
Wynns Coonawarra Estate (John Riddoch), Penfolds Bin 707, and Yalumba Caley signal Australian Cabernet from the terra rossa belt.
Chile
Almaviva (Concha y Toro–Mouton Rothschild joint venture), Don Melchor (Concha y Toro), Viñedo Chadwick, and Sena are reference Chilean Cabernets.
Argentina
Catena Zapata, Bodega Caro (Lafite-Catena), Cheval des Andes (Cheval Blanc-Terrazas), and Achaval-Ferrer round out the Andean Cabernet landscape — though Malbec dominates the country.
