Top 10 Wineries in the Wachau
The Wachau is a narrow stretch of the Danube between Melk and Krems, in Lower Austria, where vines climb terraces of gneiss and loess and almost every house in the riverside villages of Spitz, Weissenkirchen, Dürnstein, and Loiben belongs to or supplies a winery. Two grape varieties dominate: Grüner Veltliner, the white-pepper-and-green-apple variety that is Austria's signature grape, and Riesling, here grown on terraces that are some of the steepest worked vineyards in the world. The Vinea Wachau growers' association uses three quality categories — Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd — to describe ripeness, and the Smaragd wines are the region's flagships.
F. X. Pichler
Lucas Pichler now runs the estate founded by his father, Franz Xaver. The Loibenberg and Kellerberg single vineyards produce some of the most concentrated and long-lived dry Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners in Austria.
Emmerich Knoll
A Loiben estate famed for its Baroque-style label depicting Saint Urban. The Knoll family's wines — particularly the Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd and the Schütt Grüner Veltliner Smaragd — are benchmarks for the long-lived, mineral Wachau style.

Alzinger
Leo Alzinger is one of the most respected Wachau producers despite keeping a low public profile. The Loibenberg and Steinertal Smaragd bottlings are the standard-bearers; minimal-intervention, terroir-driven wines.
Nikolaihof
The oldest winery in Austria, with documented winemaking history going back to Roman times. Nikolaihof has been biodynamic since 1971 and is widely cited as Europe's first certified biodynamic estate. The Vinothek Riesling, aged for 17 years before release, is a famously unusual wine.
Hirsch (Heiligenstein)
The Hirsch estate is technically just outside the Wachau in the Kamptal, but is included in many Wachau-adjacent tasting tours. The Heiligenstein Riesling from old vines on red sandstone is one of Austria's greatest Rieslings.
Visiting the Wachau
