Switzerland is one of Europe's most fascinating wine countries, and one of the least familiar to outsiders — because the Swiss drink almost all their own wine, and only one or two percent of production is exported. The vineyards climb the Alpine and sub-Alpine slopes of six recognised regions: Valais, Vaud, Geneva, Three Lakes, Ticino, and Eastern Switzerland. Marie-Thérèse Chappaz
The patriarch of Valais biodynamic wine. Chappaz's small estate near Fully produces some of Switzerland's most respected wines, including extraordinary Petite Arvine, Marsanne (locally called Ermitage), and late-harvest sweet wines.
Domaine Jean-René Germanier
A larger Valais estate with significant land in Vétroz. The Cayas Syrah and the Amigne de Vétroz Mitis (an off-dry expression of the local Amigne grape) are particular reference points.
Pierre-Maurice Carruzzo
A Vétroz estate also focused on the local grape Amigne, which is nearly extinct outside this single village. Carruzzo's dry Amigne is one of the most distinctive Swiss whites.
Domaine Henri Cruchon
A Vaud estate in Échichens, biodynamic. The Chasselas bottlings from different parcels around Lake Geneva show the regional nuance; the estate also makes well-respected Pinot Noir and Gamaret.
Louis Bovard
A Lavaux estate (the steeply terraced UNESCO-listed shore of Lake Geneva). The Dézaley Chasselas bottlings — particularly La Médinette — are among the most precise expressions of the appellation, with serious ageing potential.

The largest cooperative-style producer in Valais, with 3,000 member growers. The single-vineyard Maître de Chais bottlings demonstrate that the cooperative model can produce wines at the top of the appellation.
Domaine de la Capitaine
A Vaud estate near Begnins, biodynamic, family-run. The Chasselas and Pinot Noir bottlings have built a strong following in the domestic market and are among the most respected biodynamic Swiss wines.
Domaine Cornulus
A Valais estate near Savièse. The Heida (the local Savagnin) and the Petite Arvine are reference bottlings of two of Valais's most distinctive native varieties.
Christian Zündel
A Ticino estate, primarily Merlot. Zündel's Orizzonte Merlot is one of the most respected Ticino reds and helped establish Ticino Merlot as a serious appellation alongside its older Italian and French neighbours.
Tamborini
A larger Ticino estate, owned by the Tamborini family for several generations. The Comano range and the limited Vinattieri reds are the standard-bearers; the estate also makes a successful traditional-method sparkling wine.
