Top 10 Wineries in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is the historic heart of South African wine — a town and a wine district 50 km east of Cape Town, set against the Helderberg, Simonsberg, and Stellenbosch mountains. Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux blends are the regional flagship; Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, and Cape White blends round out the picture. These ten estates lead.
1. Kanonkop, Stellenbosch (Simonsberg)
The reference for Pinotage and an exemplary Bordeaux blend with Paul Sauer. One of South Africa's most consistently respected estates, with deep cellar tradition.
2. Vergelegen, Somerset West (Helderberg)
A historic 17th-century estate restored by Anglo American. Vergelegen Estate (the Bordeaux red blend) and the V single-vineyard wines are South African references; the gardens and visitor experience are exceptional.
3. Meerlust, Stellenbosch
The other historic Bordeaux-blend benchmark. Rubicon — a Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot blend — has been a flagship of Cape wine since the 1980s.

Visiting Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch town is a perfect base — handsome Cape Dutch architecture, dozens of estates within fifteen minutes' drive. Most have tasting rooms open daily; many include restaurants, art collections, and gardens. February-March is harvest; May-August is quiet and beautiful.
