The Best Pinot Noir Wineries Worldwide
Pinot Noir is the most demanding red grape — thin-skinned, early- ripening, and ruthless about climate. It only makes great wine in a narrow band of cool sites. These are the producers most associated with that pursuit.
Burgundy: the Côte de Nuits
The historical reference. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (Vosne-Romanée) is the mythic estate; Domaine Leroy and Domaine Armand Rousseau the other names of the absolute summit. Domaine Méo-Camuzet, Domaine Dujac, and Comte Georges de Vogüé fill the next rank. Effectively none receive casual visitors.
Champagne (Blanc de Noirs)
A different reading of Pinot Noir — white from black grapes. Bollinger (Aÿ) and Egly-Ouriet (Ambonnay) are reference Blanc de Noirs houses; Cédric Bouchard (Roses de Jeanne) is the cult grower.
Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley
The American Pinot benchmark. Williams Selyem, Kistler, and Hirsch Vineyards are reference producers; Rochioli supplies many of the great single-vineyard sources. Marcassin (Helen Turley) is the cult Sonoma Coast bottle.
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Cooler than Sonoma, slightly more Burgundian in style. The Eyrie Vineyards (the founder), Domaine Drouhin Oregon, Bergström, Antica Terra, and Cristom are the reference estates.
Central Otago, New Zealand
The most extreme cool-climate New World Pinot region — high altitude, low rainfall, dramatic diurnal range. Felton Road, Burn Cottage, and Rippon are reference estates.
Tasmania
A small but fast-growing Pinot Noir region. Tolpuddle Vineyard (Shaw + Smith), Domaine Simha, and Stefano Lubiana are reference estates.
Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley, Australia
Cool-climate Victorian Pinot. Bass Phillip (Gippsland — technically adjacent), Yabby Lake (Mornington), Bindi (Macedon), Mac Forbes (Yarra), and Giant Steps (Yarra) are reference producers.
Germany (Spätburgunder)
The most underrated Pinot region in the world. Friedrich Becker (Pfalz), Bernhard Huber (Baden), Meyer-Näkel (Ahr), and August Kesseler (Rheingau) make Pinot Noir easily worthy of comparison with village-level Burgundy.
