The Best Chardonnay-Focused Wineries
Chardonnay is the most planted white grape on Earth and the most malleable — capable of reductive flint in Chablis, oxidative honey in the Jura, taut citrus in Tasmania, and creamy oak in Sonoma. The estates below have built their reputations almost entirely on this one variety.
Burgundy: Côte de Beaune
The benchmark. Domaine Leflaive (Puligny-Montrachet) and Domaine Coche-Dury (Meursault) are the two most uncompromising names. Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Jean-François Coche-Dury's neighbours, and Pierre- Yves Colin-Morey set the modern standard. Maison Louis Jadot's white Burgundy book is the most accessible window into the region.
Chablis
A different Chardonnay altogether — minerally, lean, oysters-and- Sancerre cool. Raveneau and Dauvissat are the cult names; François Pinon's neighbour Vincent Dauvissat in particular. William Fèvre, Domaine Christian Moreau, and Domaine Louis Michel are the accessible references for Chablis grand cru sites — Les Clos, Vaudésir, Valmur.
Champagne (Blanc de Blancs)
The chalkiest expression of Chardonnay. Salon (vintage-only Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs) is the apex; Krug Clos du Mesnil and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne are the prestige expressions. Pierre Péters and Agrapart are the grower references on the Côte des Blancs.
California
Kistler Vineyards (Sonoma) is the reference for site-driven California Chardonnay; Marcassin (Sonoma Coast) for cult mailing- list bottlings; Far Niente, Stony Hill, and Mayacamas for long-aged Napa expressions. Hudson, Hyde, and Sangiacomo are key vineyard sources.
Australia and Tasmania
Australian Chardonnay reinvented itself in the 2000s with a leaner, flinty Margaret River and Tasmania style. Leeuwin Estate (Art Series), Cullen (Kevin John), Vasse Felix Heytesbury, and Tolpuddle (Tasmania) are reference wines. Mac Forbes and Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley lead the cool-climate Victorian wave.
Tasmania
A region built largely around Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Tolpuddle and Stoney Rise are reference Chardonnays; Bay of Fires and Pirie sparkling extend the variety into traditional-method.
New Zealand
Kumeu River (West Auckland) is one of the world's most highly regarded Chardonnay specialists; Felton Road in Central Otago is better known for Pinot but produces excellent Chardonnay too.
