The Best Champagne Grower-Producers

Most Champagne is made by négociants-manipulants — houses buying fruit from many growers. The récoltant-manipulant (RM) makes Champagne from their own grapes, often from a single village or vineyard. The RM movement has reshaped the perception of Champagne since the 1990s, with growers now sitting at the top of every serious sommelier's list.

Jacques Selosse, Avize (Côte des Blancs)

The most influential grower of the modern era. Anselme Selosse's oxidative, vins de lieu approach to Grand Cru Côte des Blancs sites changed what was possible in Champagne. Effectively impossible to visit.

Egly-Ouriet, Ambonnay (Montagne de Reims)

A Pinot Noir-led RM with Grand Cru holdings in Ambonnay and Bouzy; long lees ageing and an unusually deep, vinous style.

Pierre Péters, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (Côte des Blancs)

A reference Blanc de Blancs grower with the Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons single-vineyard wine; the standard against which all Le Mesnil RMs are measured.

Agrapart & Fils, Avize (Côte des Blancs)

A leading Avize biodynamic grower; Avizoise, Mineral, and the Vénus single-vineyard are reference Côte des Blancs RMs.

Larmandier-Bernier, Vertus (Côte des Blancs)

A biodynamic Côte des Blancs grower with single-vineyard Vieille Vigne du Levant and Les Chemins d'Avize bottlings.

Vouette et Sorbée, Buxières-sur-Arce (Aube)

A leading southern grower; Bertrand Gautherot's biodynamic Aube Pinot Noir RMs (Fidèle, Blanc d'Argile) helped legitimise the region.

Cédric Bouchard / Roses de Jeanne, Aube

The cult Aube grower. Single-vineyard, single-vintage, single- village wines that broke every Champagne marketing rule.

Bérêche et Fils, Ludes (Montagne de Reims)

A modern Montagne de Reims grower making distinctive single-village and single-parcel cuvées; among the most internationally celebrated of the current generation.

Chartogne-Taillet, Merfy (north of Reims)

A small RM that revived an obscure village; old-vine Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay bottlings that have become reference points.

Tarlant, Oeuilly (Vallée de la Marne)

A long-established RM in the Marne Valley known for un-dosed Champagnes and single-parcel cuvées (La Vigne d'Or, Cuvée Louis).
