The Best Tempranillo Producers Worldwide
Tempranillo is Spain's most planted red grape and the engine of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Toro. Each region produces a recognisably different wine from the same variety — Rioja's American- oak Reserva and Gran Reserva style, Ribera's denser French-oak plateau wines, and Toro's hot-climate concentration.
Rioja Alta: the classicists
R. López de Heredia (Viña Tondonia), La Rioja Alta (Gran Reserva 904), CVNE (Imperial), Marqués de Murrieta (Castillo Ygay), Bodegas Muga (Prado Enea), and Marqués de Riscal. American oak, long oak and bottle ageing, only released when ready.
Rioja Alavesa: the modernists
Artadi (Viña El Pisón), Remírez de Ganuza, and Sierra Cantabria (Viñedos Sierra Cantabria) represent the modern, single-vineyard movement on the Alavesa side of the Ebro.
Ribera del Duero
Vega Sicilia (Único, Reserva Especial), Dominio de Pingus, Aalto, Hacienda Monasterio, Tinto Pesquera, Alión, and Pago de Carraovejas are reference Ribera estates. French oak dominates here.
Toro
Tinta de Toro (the local Tempranillo) produces the most powerful Spanish wines. Numanthia (Termanthia), Bodega Pintia (Vega Sicilia's Toro outpost), Maurodos (San Roman), and Elias Mora are leading producers.
Vinos de Pago and miscellaneous Castilla
Pago de Carraovejas straddles Ribera and the Vinos de Pago system. Mauro VS, Telmo Rodríguez (especially Pegaso), and Bodegas Leda operate outside the strict DO system in Castilla y León VT.
Portugal: Tinta Roriz
Tempranillo is widely grown across the Iberian peninsula — including in the Douro Valley, where it's called Tinta Roriz and figures prominently in dry red Douro and Port blends from estates like Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Vale Meão, and Niepoort.
Beyond Spain
Tempranillo is grown commercially in Argentina (Bodegas Bressia, Familia Schroeder), Mexico (LA Cetto), the US Pacific Northwest (Abacela in Oregon), and Australia (Mount Majura in Canberra and Tar & Roses in Victoria) — though none yet rivals the Iberian reference points.
