Vega Sicilia: A Deep Dive

Vega Sicilia is the most prestigious red wine estate in Spain. Founded in 1864 in the Ribera del Duero — almost 120 years before the DO existed — the estate's flagship Único is famous for an unprecedented ten-year programme of barrel ageing before release.

The estate

Vega Sicilia covers 250 hectares in Valbuena de Duero on the Duero river. Tinto Fino (the local Tempranillo) dominates with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec. The estate has been owned by the Álvarez family since 1982.

The exact regime varies by vintage — some are held back longer.

Reference vintages

The 1968 is the most legendary Único of all. The 1942, 1953, 1962, 1964, 1970, 1976, 1985, 1990, 1996, 2002, 2009, and 2010 are also benchmarks. Older vintages are sometimes re-released by the estate after additional ageing.

Visiting

Vega Sicilia does not accept casual visitors. Trade visits and private tastings can be arranged through allocation channels. Tempranillo lovers should base in Peñafiel and use the village's museum and tasting rooms as starting points.
