Quinta do Noval: A Deep Dive
Quinta do Noval is the reference vintage Port estate of the Pinhão valley in the Douro. Founded in 1715, the estate has produced declared vintage Ports of legendary status across three centuries — including the famous "Nacional" bottling from a tiny ungrafted parcel.
The estate
Quinta do Noval covers 145 hectares of terraced schist vineyards above the Pinhão river. The estate was a Port lodge owner-grower for most of its history; in 1993 it was acquired by AXA Millésimes (which also owns Pichon Baron in Pauillac and Disznókő in Tokaj). The Nacional
The Nacional is the single most legendary wine in Port. It comes from a 2.5-hectare parcel of vines that survived the phylloxera outbreak of the 1860s and were never grafted onto American rootstock. The wine has been declared 23 times since 1931. The 1931, 1963, and 1994 are among the most expensive Ports ever sold.

- Quinta do Noval Vintage Port — declared in great years. The 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2018 are reference modern Vintage Ports.
- Quinta do Noval LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) — released roughly four years after vintage; a more accessible Port from the same grapes.
- Quinta do Noval Aged Tawny — 10, 20, 30, and 40-year-old tawny Ports, blended for consistent house style.
- Quinta do Noval dry Douro red and white — increasingly important table wines from the same vineyards.
The terroir
The estate is in the heart of the Cima Corgo, the central Douro sub-region considered the best for Port. South-facing schist terraces, low annual rainfall, very hot summers, and old vines contribute to the unusually concentrated style.
Visiting
Quinta do Noval welcomes visitors at the estate above Pinhão. Tours include the terraced vineyards, the cellar, and a structured tasting; the Nacional parcel is shown but not poured. Book ahead. Pinhão is a one-hour drive from Vila Nova de Gaia or a slow train along the Douro from Porto.
