Top 10 Wineries in Ribera del Duero
Ribera del Duero sits on a high plateau in Castilla y León, where Tempranillo (locally Tinto Fino) ripens slowly under intense sun and cold nights. The DO was only created in 1982, but it now contests Rioja for the crown of Spanish red wine. These ten estates lead the field.
1. Vega Sicilia, Valbuena de Duero
The historic Ribera estate, founded 1864. Único (long-aged Tempranillo with a touch of Cabernet) and Reserva Especial (a multi-vintage blend) are Spain's most prestigious reds.
2. Dominio de Pingus, Quintanilla de Onésimo
Peter Sisseck's tiny cult estate, founded 1995. Pingus from very old Tempranillo vines is one of the most expensive Spanish wines; Flor de Pingus and PSI follow.

Visiting Ribera del Duero
Valladolid is the closest large city; Peñafiel — with its iconic castle housing the Museum of Provincial Wine — is the heart of the DO and the most practical base. Many estates run scheduled tours; Pingus and Vega Sicilia do not accept casual visits.
