The Rhône splits into two distinct wine worlds. The Northern Rhône, narrow and granitic, is Syrah country — Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas. The Southern Rhône, broad and stony, is Grenache-led blend country, headed by Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Visiting the Rhône
The Northern Rhône is a narrow ribbon along the river — Tain, Ampuis, Cornas — and walkable in places. The Southern Rhône is broader and car-bound; Châteauneuf village itself concentrates several tasting rooms. Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie hill walks are open to the public.
