Top 10 Wineries in Central Otago
Central Otago sits on the inland side of New Zealand's South Island, in the lee of the Southern Alps. It is one of the world's southernmost significant wine regions, at the 45th parallel south. The climate is continental — hot dry summers, cold winters with frost — which is unusual for a region surrounded by ocean and which gives Central Otago's wines a structure and depth that the more maritime Marlborough, to the north, cannot reach. The signature grape is Pinot Noir, planted on schist-derived soils across six sub-regions: Gibbston, Bannockburn, Cromwell-Lowburn-Pisa, Bendigo, Wanaka, and Alexandra.
Felton Road
Founded by Stewart Elms in 1991, now run by Nigel Greening. The Bannockburn estate is biodynamic and has developed a reputation for some of the most precise New Zealand Pinot Noir. Block 3 and Block 5 single-vineyard wines are reference points.
Rippon
A pioneering estate on the shore of Lake Wanaka, biodynamic since its founding. Nick Mills produces some of the most distinctive Central Otago Pinot Noir, including a single-vineyard Mature Vine Pinot from vines planted in the 1980s.
Mount Difficulty
A larger producer in Bannockburn with a strong reputation for single-vineyard wines (Long Gully, Pipeclay Terrace, Target Gully). The cellar door has a commanding view over the Cromwell Basin and draws many regional visitors.
Burn Cottage
A biodynamic estate in Cromwell co-founded by US wine importer Marquis Sauvage and consulting winemaker Ted Lemon (of California's Littorai). The wines are restrained, precise, and high in tension.
Mount Edward
Founded in 1997 by Alan Brady (one of the Central Otago founders) and now run by Duncan Forsyth. The estate focuses on Pinot Noir from distinct Gibbston, Pisa, and Bannockburn vineyards under separate labels.
Two Paddocks
The estate of actor Sam Neill (of Jurassic Park fame). Two Paddocks sits across four small Central Otago vineyards; the wines have gained serious critical respect well beyond the celebrity angle.
Quartz Reef
A Bendigo estate founded by Rudi Bauer in 1996. Quartz Reef makes both still Pinot Noir and a traditional-method sparkling — one of New Zealand's most respected méthode traditionnelle producers.
Akarua
A Bannockburn estate with significant Pinot Noir and sparkling-wine production. The Akarua Brut and Rua Pinot are reliable mid-range expressions of the region; the prestige Bannockburn Pinot Noir is the top wine.
Carrick
A Bannockburn estate certified organic, known for nervy, energetic Pinot Noir and a small Pinot Noir-based rosé. The Carrick Bannockburn Pinot Noir is the standard release; Excelsior is the prestige cuvée.
Pyramid Valley
Technically based in North Canterbury, but with significant Central Otago vineyards and frequent tasting room appearance in the region. Pyramid Valley is biodynamic and produces some of the most intellectually engaged Pinot Noir in New Zealand.
Visiting Central Otago
