Top 10 Wineries in Rioja
Rioja is Spain's most internationally recognised wine region. Tempranillo- led blends aged in American (and increasingly French) oak, classified by ageing — Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva — that puts time in barrel and bottle on the label. The ten estates below are the names that built that reputation.
1. R. López de Heredia (Viña Tondonia), Haro
The most uncompromising classical producer in Rioja. Viña Tondonia Reserva, Viña Bosconia, and white Tondonia are released only when ready — sometimes decades after vintage.
2. La Rioja Alta, Haro
The Gran Reserva 904 and Gran Reserva 890 are reference points of classical Rioja Alta — long oak ageing, long bottle ageing, only released in great vintages.
3. CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España), Haro
The Imperial Gran Reserva (Rioja Alta) and Viña Real (Alavesa) are classical Rioja benchmarks; Contino (a separate estate) is the single-vineyard expression.
4. Marqués de Murrieta, Logroño

A modern, very high-end producer; Trasnocho and the Gran Reserva are extraordinarily concentrated Tempranillo expressions.

Visiting Rioja
Haro and Logroño are the natural bases. The Barrio de la Estación in Haro — six historic bodegas clustered around the railway station — is the most concentrated wine-tourism walk in Spain. Most estates take appointments; some run shop-front tastings.
