Top 10 Wineries in the Okanagan Valley
The Okanagan Valley stretches roughly 250 km south from Kelowna, British Columbia, to the U.S. border at Osoyoos. The valley floor is narrow, the lake-lined slopes are steep, and the southern third is genuinely desert — Canada's only true pocket-desert ecosystem. Within this strip the climate moves from cool-climate Riesling and Pinot Noir in the north to ripe Syrah and Bordeaux blends in the south, and a few of Canada's most ambitious wineries have set the tone for the broader Pacific Northwest.
Mission Hill Family Estate
The most architecturally imposing winery in Canada — Anthony von Mandl's hilltop estate above Westbank, with its bell tower and underground barrel cellar. The Oculus Bordeaux blend has been a Canadian benchmark since the late 1990s; the Quatrain and Compendium single-vineyard wines deserve more international attention than they get.
CedarCreek Estate Winery
Also part of the von Mandl group, on the east shore of Okanagan Lake. Certified organic, biodynamic-adjacent farming, and a sophisticated Pinot Noir programme led by winemaker Taylor Whelan that competes with anything west of the Rockies.
Burrowing Owl Estate Winery
Hilltop in the desert south, overlooking Osoyoos Lake. Burrowing Owl pioneered seriously ripe Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah in Canada in the late 1990s. The on-site Sonora Room restaurant and guesthouse remain the most polished wine-tourism address in the south Okanagan.
Osoyoos Larose
A joint venture between Vincor and Groupe Taillan (Château Gruaud-Larose). The single-wine estate produces only one bottling — Le Grand Vin, a Bordeaux blend grown on the bench above Osoyoos — and was for years the South Okanagan's most credible international ambassador.
Tantalus Vineyards
Old-vine Riesling specialist on Kelowna's Pioneer Block, one of the oldest continuously planted Riesling sites in the Okanagan. Owner Eric Savics and winemaker David Paterson make some of the most ageworthy Rieslings outside the Mosel.
Quails' Gate Estate Winery
Family-run in West Kelowna by the Stewart family. The Stewart Family Reserve Pinot Noir and the Connemara Estate range are benchmarks for the north Okanagan; the lake-side restaurant is a fixture of Kelowna wine tourism.
Le Vieux Pin
In Oliver, in the south. Severine Pinte makes Rhône-leaning Syrah and Roussanne/Marsanne that compete on quality with Walla Walla and the northern Rhône itself. LVP Equinoxe Syrah is intermittently brilliant.
Black Hills Estate Winery
On the Black Sage Bench, near Oliver. Nota Bene, a Bordeaux blend, was one of Canada's first cult wines on release — for a decade the estate sold its entire production on a single Saturday allocation day.
Painted Rock Estate Winery
A more recent (2007) estate on the Skaha Bluffs above Penticton. Bordeaux-blend reds (Red Icon) and Chardonnay from a single hillside vineyard. Considered one of the South Okanagan's most quality-driven newer projects.
Inniskillin Okanagan
The Okanagan satellite of Niagara's icewine pioneer. Inniskillin Okanagan's Riesling and Vidal icewines compete with Niagara's at the top of the Canadian icewine category — a winter-vintage specialty that few other countries can produce reliably.
Visiting the Okanagan
Kelowna has the regional airport and most of the north Okanagan wineries; Penticton, Naramata, Oliver, and Osoyoos string out southward by car (about two hours end to end).
