Top 10 Wineries in the Douro
The Douro Valley is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, established in 1756. Schist terraces, native varieties like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, and a long British shipping history make this a region of two traditions: vintage Port from Vila Nova de Gaia and the dry red Douro DOC that took off in the 1990s.

Visiting the Douro
Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, concentrates the great Port lodges within a short walk. The Douro Valley itself — Pinhão, Régua, Foz Côa — is best visited by train along the river or by chartered boat. Many quintas now offer overnight stays.
